Black and white portraits3/17/2023 ![]() ![]() Our modern technology allows you to photograph images as you see them in high definition and colour quality – which leaves only a few reasons why one would want to take pictures in monochrome – and that is aesthetics. The question is “what is the need for black and white photography in an advanced world where coloured photographs are captured in a heartbeat’s notice?” The Aesthetic The need for monochrome photography began to fade away. However, with the advancement of time and technology, the original black and white cameras gave way to a modern colourized version. When the camera was first introduced into society, people had no choice but to take pictures in black and white. What is visually pleasing to the eye draws our attention, and hence, prefer images that portray a contrast of colours. We perceive the world in colour and more often than not, we are attracted to the bright and colourful. For there is so much hiding amongst the greys!” ![]() The entertainment industry’s casting headshot is a perfect exemplar for their traditional requirements, slow to change here in the UK, the industry moves quickly to colour in other parts of the world but we’re still pleased with our glacial pace of change.Let’s discuss Black and White PhotographyĪ wise man once said, “Don’t define your world in black and white. Some industries however have traditionally used black and white to represent their members. Now ask your CEO if he or she would like to have black and white shots representing the company and it is likely to be a different story. Black and white portrait images are still very popular, just ask any of your friends and they’ll tell you that they love the forgiving and sentimental nature of black and white shots. Not everything is Black & White but sometimes it can be just what is needed. Black and white photography can evoke a mood – from nostalgia to sadness to yearning, black and white pictures somehow convey emotion in a way that colour images simply can’t.This simplicity would be lost if the image was in full colour. Think of a single white flower on a black background or the bare branches of a tree silhouetted against the sky. Black and white photography is simple – beautiful and minimal images in black and white can have amazing impact for their simplicity.And the more colourful the background, the more one’s eye is drawn to the focused calm of a black and white picture. Black and white photography makes a statement – in a colourful world, a black and white image can stand out from the crowd.It seems counter-intuitive but when you compare colour and black and white versions of the same image, you’ll see that it’s true. ![]() Black and white photography is clearer – by this I mean that a good black and white image can enhance a subject’s features and create a clearer picture of what they look like.Experimenting with this in post-production can completely change the tone or the mood of a picture in a way that wouldn’t work for a colour image. It can be subtle – dialing down the contrast a little on black and white images can result in beautifully subtle compositions in soft shades of grey.Black and white images on the other hand can seem refreshingly simple and it’s often easier to see and interpret the main focus of the picture. ![]()
